Plaine Ayémé, November 15, 2024
Today, Gabon celebrated the inauguration of the Plaine Ayémé solar power plant, marking a critical step in the country’s energy transition and sustainable development. This ambitious project, with an initial delivery on October 22 of 11 MW out of the 30 MW planned for the first phase, aims to increase access to clean energy for the Gabonese population.
The first phase of the project, dedicated to providing electricity to 300,000 households in the Libreville region, seeks to meet the growing energy demands and offer a renewable alternative to traditional thermal capacities.
Audrey Bouka Bouka, Electrical Project Engineer at Solen, stated: “The inauguration of the Ayémé Maritime solar power plant, in the Komo Mondah department, demonstrates the transitional government’s increasing commitment to gradually replacing thermal capacities in Libreville’s interconnected grid. This initiative will prevent more than 152,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. This project aligns with the vision of His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who is determined to provide lasting solutions to the energy crisis that has persisted for decades. By inaugurating this plant, the President is steering Gabon towards an energy revolution through the integration of decentralized energy within Libreville’s interconnected network.”
This innovative use of decentralized photovoltaic energy in the Libreville grid constitutes a true revolution, paving the way for sustainable energy transition. The project aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Gabon’s energy mix, positioning the country as a key player in green energy production in Central Africa.
The solar power plant, ideally located between Ayémé Plaine and Ayémé Maritime, represents a significant technological and environmental advance for the region and aligns with Gabon’s energy strategy. By diversifying its energy sources, the country is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and a cleaner, more responsible future.
